SEAPIA began with a simple belief:
local children deserved somewhere to play, feel supported and discover what they were capable of.
That idea has grown with generations of Sands End families, because a playground can be much more than somewhere to pass the time. It can be where a child makes their first friend in a new neighbourhood, discovers something they are good at, finds an adult they trust or begins to see themselves differently.
That is the kind of difference SEAPIA wants to make: creating the relationships, experiences and sense of belonging that help children grow with confidence.
NOT JUST
As Sands End changed, SEAPIA changed with it. New buildings arrived, services evolved and different generations needed different kinds of support.
What stayed constant was the idea that the community itself could create something valuable for its children.
In 1970, a group of Sands End residents came together because local children needed somewhere of their own. They secured the disused Sunlight Laundry wash house in William Parnell Park, and little by little, staff and young people transformed the space, building play structures and swings from the materials around them. SEAPIA’s first adventure playground was born.
