Sands End Adventure Playground & 1 o’clock club Association (SEAPIA) was founded in 1970 by local residents who recognised the importance of having a place for children to play. The small voluntary committee secured the disused Sunlight Laundry wash house building in William Parnell park.  Bit by bit the staff and youth of Sands End built various structures and swings out of debris and materials lying around.  The first ‘venture playground was created.  A ‘1 o’clock club’ for under 5’s operated out of what was previously the wash house toilets.

In the 1980’s, as the area was developed, SEAPIA got two brand new buildings. The under 5’s was moved to ‘The Pagoda’, an annex on Pearscroft Court, and the Playground was moved across the park to its very own building and adventure play structures.

As the Under 5’s was open in the mornings now, the ‘1 o’clock club’ name was no longer relevant.  Wanting to retain the acronym, ‘Sands End Adventure Playground & 1 o’clock club Association’ became ‘Sands End Associated Projects In Action’. SEAPIA. The Under 5’s got another brand new building, however SEAPIA no longer provide this service.
